What are Fungal Nails?

Fungal nails, also referred to as onychomycosis, is a condition which affects a person’s finger or toenails and is caused by the development of fungus, most commonly trichophyton. Fungal nails are commonly associated with wet or moist areas such as communal showers and swimming pools. Athletes are also prone to developing the fungus because of consistently being in tight, sweaty shoes which also cause trauma or pressure on the toenails. Having an impaired immune system also makes it more likely to develop fungal nails.

What Types of Nail Fungus Infections Are There?

There are three types of fungal infections:

  • The infection starts at the end of the nail and moves up the nail- This is known as distal subungal onychomycosis and is the most common. It is usually found on the toenails as opposed to the fingernails.
  • The infection starts at the base of the nail and moves down the nail- Also called proximal subungal onychomycosis, this infection is not as common. This usually occurs in people with a damaged immune system.
  • Infections associated with yeast onychomycosis- This is caused by a yeast named candida. It is more common on the fingernails. This causes yellow, white, brown, or thickened nails. Occasionally people will also have yeast in their mouths or have a chronic paronychia nail infection which is also affected by yeast.

How are Fungal Nails Treated?

Creams and topical medications are used frequently to treat fungal nails. However, when the condition is a bit more serious oral medications are used because they have proven to be very effective. The most commonly prescribed medication which has been effective is Lamisil otherwise known as terbinafine. Photodynamic therapy or laser therapy has also shown to be an effective treatment and uses the application of a special light-activated agent or uses a laser to target the affected tissue without damaging the healthy skin.
